La Ceiba

La Ceiba

La Ceiba is the third largest city in Honduras, and is probably the country’s most vibrant. A relatively young city, it got its name from a huge Ceiba tree that was next to the beach and provided shade to the workers at the dock and locals during the afternoon. It is the capital of the department of Atlantida, one of the 18 departments of Honduras. La Ceiba has long been the operation hub of the Standard Fruit Company, producers of bananas, pineapples, grapefruits and many other agricultural goods that Honduras exports.

Adventure and nature

Adventure and nature La Ceiba is considered "The Capital of Ecotourism", due to its diverse natural offerings. Among the many popular areas, the imposing Pico Bonito (Beautiful Peak) stands at 2,435 meters. Pico Bonito's tropical rain forest provides beautiful waterfalls and spectacular landscapes. It is also home to the Cangrejal River, one of the few rivers in Central America enjoyed by people partaking in such water sports as white water rafting and canoeing.

Vida Nocturna

Vida NocturnaLa Ceiba is a lot more that a port city with lots of hospitality and charm. In my personal opinion, it has the potential to develop into the Ecotourism Capital in Central America. Its proximity to the Pico Bonito National Park, Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve are but a few of the many nature attractions available at just a short distance from the city. In addition, infrastructure to host tourists is slowly, but surely on the upswing.

Cultura e historia

Cultura e historiaLa Ceiba began to form during the first years of the XIX century. In its origins, it was a Garífuna and Pech settlement, drawn by the wealth of its lands. But the real push began with the arrival of the Banana companies during the latter years of that same century and early XX century. With them, came the boats, the railroad and constant commerce with New Orleans and Europe. Soon the architecture was modified, modernized and the native gastronomy fused with foreign aromas and flavors. The city is still headquarters of the Standard Fruit Company of Honduras, producers of a large variety of export fruit, included banana, pineapple and grapefruit.
